Up and Coming #1: Mayo and Jeremy from France

Posted on: November 21, 2009

upandcoming header

Ok guys, the first Up and Coming post is here! I want to introduce you to these new french flourishers, Ferrand Jeremy and Mayo.

We know the Scenacle guys (Aristote, Mattgic and Maxim), the Fun With Aces guys (Dimitri Arleri and Ryoma) the Queen Hearts crew (Paolo Ascer & co.) and maybe a couple more but there are not so many french dudes out there that have appeared here at .thecuso … Can you point me to another one? (check the archives, I’m sure you can)

What you have to do here is to obviously check out their video and take a couple of minutes of your day to write a constructive comment about what you’ve just seen. Of course you want your comment to be as in-depth and relevant as you can if you want to opt in for the rewards but that doesn’t mean you have to only say positive things about the video.

Be objective, highlight the good things but don’t forget the bad things because those are what really matter in the end.

You know this Up and Coming initiative wasn’t conceived just to encourage people to write more comments but to help the newcomers to get quicker to the top so think of ways to make that possible and let’s move the art forward one step at a time.

If you live in France or plan to go there anytime soon you might want to contact these guys for a little jam or meetup. Maybe you see them in your next local convention and recognize them for being here or maybe you just want to improve your non-canadian french accent… ^^

Show your love but don’t be afraid to be a bit harshy… Only a bit you “haterz”!

Rewards

Oh, before I forget, let’s talk about some of the prizes for the first two “Up and Coming” posts (next one will be in December)…

If you help Kate with their modeling stuff here, she will donate a sealed copy of Bone Ho’s Anaconda DVD, the “Secret Books” of De’vo vol.1 and some cards.

Chad Nelson contacted me the other day to offer a copy of the best seller Surfaced DVD where you can learn the multiple variations of the famous Clipshift color change.

I will make sure my friend Jason Brumbalow throws in some Arcane decks.

Dan and Dave are also willing to contribute with some gift cards filled with magic cash for their store and other cool stuff I can’t tell you just yet.

Contribute as much as you can and it will pay off.

Great video, you guys will go far !!!

  2. Joe Says:

    Smooth=Slow

  3. Riddick Says:

I liked the vid guys , but I’m pretty sure saying you should have a little more of relaxed practice , and try to rush a bit less.In some moves you can clearly see breaks in the flow of the thing…

  4. Aristote Says:

I have to agree with Riddick, you need some fluidity (can’t believe I am saying that myself).
Speed is awesome but to many “gaps” in your flourishes.
Keep it up! Very cool stuffs.

  5. Geoffrey Says:

    France is coming
Those flourishes need to be a bit smoother. Keep it up.

  6. Leo Says:

    I agree on the smoothness…But very nice flourishes..Man AND I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE doinG THOSE hOT SHOT MOVES..the ending was B A D A S S!!!!!!!

  7. Saul Says:

work on smoothness, and try to make the overall video more relaxed, i really liked he variety except for the fact that there was no fans, which is perfectly ok if you want it like that

  8. Billy Says:

well, just like others said, smoothness is the main thing u guys need to work on to eliminate the gap. u will go really really far..

and how long u guys had been playing around i wonder?

    regards,
    billy.

Hey chaps. There’s a nice sense of playfulness in this video, and i found myself smiling at some of your ideas (like using a spring to trigger a kickflip)and the nice variation of cam angles kept the pace moving nicely.

A couple of things i did observe though would be that although there were some exceptionally well performed moves buried in there (1:52 is very nice indeed, good sense of control and hands were suitably busy :P)
but i fwlt a point like you were trying to do to much at once. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fantastic you have so much energy and interest, but i would take the moves you want to perform and nail them to look and FEEL like the moves at 1:52 and 0:50 (note they both stem from a tornado system..so this could be a good thing to explore for you as there seems to be some potential waiting from this style of move).

Choppiness is quite apparent in here, but you guys have some serious speed! However i would advise letting your fingers absorb more simple experience so they can begin to keep up with the drive you obviously are burning to express.

Overall, some nice chops in their, and a few refreshing ideas but i would just advise “toning down a bit” till you can really really really keep up with the pace you set for yourself.

    Peace out.

    -The Docter.

    Hey guys,
let me start off by saying WOW. You guys definatly put effort into this, and i really enjoyed it. Its nice to see people come together in the art to make a video, so that was cool as well. Everyone keeps saying to be smooth, but they’re not telling you how? let me attempt. Start out on a cut that you would like to personally improve on. Now how do you perform a cut? with your hands. How do you do this? with the knowledge of how the cut works, concentration, but most importantly, muscle memory. That is the key. Perform the cut the best you can, and notice how your fingers and muscles move. Pretend like the cards aren’t there. Get used to that feeling, and then when you want to do the cut, just exicute the muscle and finger movements. Think about it like this: how do you learn in school? by some loud annoying teacher that stands up in front of the class and repeats something OVER AND OVER, and then you remember it by repition because it sticks in your memory. The same thing applies here; after you constantly practice, it will be super easy, and then you can be fast and smooth at the same time!! the spins and hot shots were incredible!! i can see a lot of smoothness, just use the advice i gave you to kick up in speed!! also, music should provide a definate feel to the video. Usually, music with no vocals is best, and to keep attention, the music should be upbeat or mysterious. For thousands of copy-right free music, just go here: http://www.freeplaymusic.com, and look through the different styles. Also, the editing was good, but there was a cut to a different scene very often. My advice for this: Find a move that will loop a few flourishes together, instead of stopping the camera after every flourish. The fewer the camera cuts: the more fun to watch, and the more professional you look. But really guys, this was pretty mind blowing :) the knowledge of cuts that you posses is incredible, and this was great. Down the road there are always haters, but blow them off. They’re usually just jealous. Take care guys, thanks for sharing your great abilitys, and welcome to the community.

  11. Mathias Says:

It is certainly evident that you 2 guys practice a lot and seem quite dedicated, which is great. Though it does seem that you focus on speed (I may be wrong).

Cuts that are done fast can look great, but they look much better if they flow smoothly. That way it’s pleasing to the eye and more enjoyable to watch (and to perform).

I think you guys have great technical skill, but some of the moves were done is ways where it didn’t show the full-beauty of the cuts like:

    the one-handed cut sequence
    Blanco
    Mockingbird-variation (00:50)
    Stun-Gun

If you watch the creator’s of the last 3 moves^ perform there own moves, you’ll see that they perform/present the moves in a way where it shows the true-beauty of the moves.

What I learned from watching/studying experienced cardists, is that you shouldn’t just ‘do’ the moves, but ‘perform’ and ‘present’ them so the others who are watching can enjoy and appreciate it.

I’m looking forward to seeing more of you guys in the near future, because you seem to have the passion, dedication, and technical skill to be awesome.

  12. shueking Says:

First thing, the good part, you guys can handle cards like a totally pro. You should do some of the florishes out side the house, like out side in the garden, under a fountain or even behind a waterfall. It will make the video much much more nicer to watch.

But! the bad thing is about the song, its kinda disturbing. It has to much BAD words, you should put song that is more relaxing or better.

But overall you 2 did great! I’ll give it a “4.5/5″.

Hope to see more of you 2 in the future and hope you 2 will create your own florishes and be much more better than now.

    Take care, Cheers.

hey again guys, just thought i should add something. Ive been into this art for about a year, i started out getting to know some of the knowledge behind everything, then began cuts. I have yet to make a video, im still drafting on some ideas and some of my own concepts that i will more-than-likely make tutorials for. If you guys have any questions, or just wanna talk or something, message my youtube http://www.youtube.com/stephencooleyonline . Heck, i may end up asking you guys a few questions! i love the skill you both posess, and i hope i helped in my previous comment. Have a great day! ~stephen

  20. wZEnigma Says:

Great job guys. The video as far as quality was great. Don’t get me wrong, you guys are definitely skilled, but I saw a lot of repetition in your flourishes. I don’t want you guys to get pidgeonholed into one certain genre. That said, within your style, there was a lot of variety.

And, most importantly, you guys are casual about it. When you flourish, you don’t burn your hands and put every ounce of concentration into it, but rather lay back and just feel free with it. That’s really important.

As far as speed, the flourish itself is more important than the speed at which it is done. And you need to open up a bit more. The indoors thing and the fact that you were wearing long sleeves kinda made it closed up a bit. No biggie though.

Great job on the coordination, especially in the final shot, which I enjoyed. I think it would be interesting to see some simpler flourishes, like fans and spreads, be incorporated into your routine.

    Best of wishes.

    Ian

it was good but the thing that pisses me off about the french guys is not there skills but there always dressed amazingly for their videos.

  24. Tarvi Says:

    Hey guys!

I’ve been meaning to write here for a while, to HOPEFULLY aid you, and support Alejandro’s “Up and Coming” scheme. I have no assignments to do now so, let me get started :)

You showed excellent speed throughout the video, and this demonstrates a great natural ability for manipulating cards. However, the moves were often jerky, and quite mechanical. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with this, but it does mean that the moves need time to become completely natural. Try practicing things slower, so that you get the timing between each hand just right. Trust me, participents in the art won’t be the only people to notice the difference. Laypeople will see a smoothness and a mastery of the cards and realise it’s something really special.

Remember, Smooth does NOT = Slow. Nor does Fast = Rough.

    Let me explain.
The opposite of Smooth is Rough, the opposite of Fast = Slow. Therefore, Smoothness and Speed CAN mix! It’s a case of practice and dedication, beyond simply learning the mechanics of a move.

Remember: Smoothness begins in the arms, and ends in the cards.

You showed great thought with your moves, they were creative and as someone else pointed out, “playful”, as with the spring and the kickflip which I really liked! Perhaps focus a bit more on that “fun” side of things if you enjoy it, that sort of spirit sets you apart from many, many other cardistry videos.

I saw a LOT of twirly moves, spinning packets etc. I’d like to see the broardening of your routines, to incorporate the many different styles. Don’t BREAK your own style in doing so, but do go looking for different things which catch your eye and try and incoporate them in some useful way, into the things you do. It will increase viewers perception of your skills, that you have a large base on which to draw moves from.

I’d love to see a lot more of you two flourishing in the same shot. The moments where you did, were the highlights for me, the kickflip+spring and both of you doing a spring.

So far as the editing goes it was fine. A couple more fade transitions might have been nicer, as your moves were quite dainty but the music was extremely agressive and the clips went straight into each other. You both looked pretty chilled out as well, so actual video images didn’t really match the editing and music. Something to think about :-)

Overall a decent video, and certainly some really good moments in there!

Well done, and please, take this advice to heart in a good way. I don’t want to force it on you both. Take what you think will be useful to you, and use it ;-)

    Au revoir!

    -David

Salut les copains et vive la France !!!
    Back to seriousness…
I’m only a beginner in this art, so some things that I’ll say might sound stupid… However, I’ve got several years of piano behind me, and in my view some of its concepts fit in cardistry.
This is one of my favourite videos. Good variety of cuts and flourishes. The editing is simple and clear, although you could change the angles a bit. Camera is shaking and that makes me dizzy: better fix it or move it slowly, I dunno.
I love the casualty you both show at the beginning and at the end of the video, way of saying : “hey that’s easy”. I loved the variations on kickflip, pandora, akira, etc.

  28. MrMelvin1991 Says:

I watched the video several times. Another thing I noticed which I like, is when you miss the hotshot card at the end: we’re human right ?
    Gonna end my review later…

  29. MrMelvin1991 Says:

    hey me again…
    Now about the cuts.
I noticed a lack of fluidity during several cuts.
For example, let’s take the first cut at 0:07 which ends like mecka. The end isn’t as fluid and flowing as it should be. I suggest you do the revolution cut in the left hand WHILE you put the lower packet on top in the right hand, this way there’s no waiting and all the moves melt in each other. Doing one thing in one hand, then another in the other hand, isn’t fluid. Also be careful about the closer move : it has to be gentle and not abrupt.

About the blanco cut : is it a variation or is it just the way you learned it ? cos the way you twist the small packet before gripping it in the left hand is a bit ugly. Flourishes shouldn’t be ugly because then it could mean you haven’t trained enough, or you’re messing with cards : that’s the way I see things. Also, be careful about the end of blanco : why do you re-grip the small packet and fiddle with it as though you were trying to square it, when you could simply let it fall on top of the deck, as taught in thecuso’ tut ?
Now openers and closers should be good and fluid, better not be choppy or fiddling.

  30. MrMelvin1991 Says:

I don’t think it’s a good idea to include flourishes that aren’t perfect in xcm videos. For example, there’s Sebastian’s 360 revolution and that sybil at 2.03 and also Ambrose’s Stun-gun : better practice these before putting them in a video, cos then it’s a bit “ugly”.
An advice for Jackson five : try to stretch the packets as far as possible, so as to maximise its visual beauty.
The opener at 1:00 could be more fluid :the picking of the packet should be instinctive. Try to redo things slowly and smoothly, it doesn’t have to be fast but it has to be perfect.

  31. MrMelvin1991 Says:

Of course there’s nothing to say about speed : you guys seem to have wonderful abilities, I’m just pointing out some little things that might enhance your flourishes.
To laymen people these little things are invisible : however try working on them slowly, with the same pace throughout your cuts, then not only laymen will tell you “it’s wicked” but they’ll also tell you “it’s beautiful”.
Same pace, gentle, instinctive and smooth handling = one big flourish and not just moves following each other.
When you feel comfortable enough, try adding to each of the flourishes a bit of your personality, so as to make each and every one of them poetic.
Hope this will help. These advices I give to you and to me.
I have to congratulate you guys for your creativity and variations/combos, and I wish I could do half of what you’re doing.
    Cheers, et bonne chance !!!

Ps : sorry for my english.
