Hello, again!
In this article I will cover the whole “underground” aspect of card handling, its purposes, pros, cons, etc.
To begin, what is “underground”? What sort of thing falls under this category? To be simple, something that is “underground” is a move, person, group, or community that is kept to oneself or to a select few people. One of these kinds of things that isn’t public and is kept somewhat secret. We all have these sorts of things, usually in the form of moves, so we’ll discuss that aspect first.
Moves:
This is certainly the most common aspect of the “underground”. Moves. We all have those moves or ideas that we created ourselves, and sometimes we want to keep them to ourselves. This is fine, but you also must consider to what purpose you are doing this. Are you planning to release a product in the future, a series of tutorials, or are you just keeping them to yourself for the sake of having a secret? If it is the latter of the three, then you may want to give it some second thought; imagine how much more recognized you’ll be for releasing cool material than you will be for having secrets. Additionally, it is important to ensure that your moves are, to some degree at least, original. While it is normal for those new to the art to create moves that are variations of what they already know (this is fine), it is also important to explore things that are truly original. It may take some time to get the hang of it, but you can do it!
But I digress.
People:
Not nearly as common as underground moves, we have underground people. Those who keep themselves out of the public eye and maintain an air of mystery about them. They keep themselves and things about them secret, or only shared with a select few people. I don’t see much of a reason to do this unless it is to serve a specific purpose. I have yet to find a purpose of that nature, but I’m sure that there are some out there. I will further address this in later articles.
Groups:
Occasionally an underground flourish-group will be formed. The group may be made up of people who, as individuals, are in the public eye, but as a group they are not. This isn’t very common, but none the less it exists.
As with many other forms of “underground” things, these don’t have much use if they aren’t the way they are for a purpose. A group that keeps only to itself, for the sake of keeping to itself, doesn’t serve much purpose. But there ARE reasons for a group to be underground; albeit temporarily.
These reasons are simple. The group may want to organize itself, gather it’s resources, and prepare itself fully before it makes itself known. It is fair to say that any group that emerges should emerge ready to take on the flourishing world, and should emerge with a game-plan.
Communities:
Sometimes there are also whole card-communities (forums and other related things) that are kept secret. These are also not entirely common, but they do arise.
I feel that a community could be kept “underground” if, perhaps, you only wanted to invite friends into it, you were in the process of constructing it, or it was just not for the general public, etc. It’s really up to the person making it how he handles the community.
Overall, I don’t mind it too much as long as it doesn’t get too dramatic (“this move has been passed down, in secret, for 12 generations, it’s power has been known to turn hair gray”, etc).
There there you go, those are my thoughts on “The Underground”.

you seem to be hypocritical in your thoughts. How many public videos have you released? Oh – sorry you can’t delete my posts here Vince.

Just for the record, Daniel Madison is not underground. Stop saying that he is, it’s getting really annoying.

First of all, I never said Daniel Madison was underground, so I have no idea where you got that from.
And Adam, man you are getting sadder and sadder lately. Not releasing videos does not equal underground, I guess every new guy is underground then, by your logic? I am fully in the public eye, people know all about me (my age, what I look like, where I live, etc), nothing about me is secret. There are several others on the various forums who haven’t released a video yet, either. I guess they’re all underground? No. You are really grasping at straws in attempts to make me look bad, dude. But next time, think through your posts before you post them. ;)

I never said that you said that Daniel Madison was underground. I just said that I was sick of other people making such a fuss about him.
Also, I have to side with Adam, underground means that you have special moves that you decide not to show people. You’re taking what Adam said to a complete other direction.

Going to tell me where you saw that bit on Daniel Madison in my post…?
Adam’s point was videos. “How many public videos have you released?”, that was the point he made, and that was the point I addressed. Now I will address your point. Underground does not just mean that you have moves that you don’t show to anyone, there is more to it. As outlined in the article, a PERSON who is underground has more going on than that. I would hardly even call De’vo “underground”, since he is so much in the spotlight, but other individuals such as the people De’vo talks about would be more along the lines of “underground”. Secondly, I have no moves that I show to no-one, I share all of my material with a rather large audience (yes, manipulators, not just laymen). I just don’t post all of my material publicly, which NO ONE does. xD
Honestly now, if you want to debate me formulate a good argument. ;)

It’s a stupid term coined by elitists to make themselves feel special.
If people don’t want to share material with others, that’s perfectly fine – just don’t make it seem like a big deal, because it isn’t.

Vinnie is an idiot. POP IT LOCK IT!
April 3rd, 2008 at 11:17 pm
although I do not agree with what some of the more aggro guys say in this forum, I am looking forward to your first publically released video Vinnie. the only clip I’ve seen of you flourishing was as “Blades” on the Guild. nice spring too.

I completely agree with Phil

Ben, I completely agree.
Trash, thanks! :D
Phil and Gapz, looks like you’re going to have to get used to me. ;)

Sorry man, I can’t get use to homosexuals….
April 5th, 2008 at 4:00 am
You might want to throw away the high-school comeback book and get some decent material. ;P
When that happens, hit me up and insult me, I’ll grade it for you. Or better yet, get some good ideas together and bounce them off me in the comments for my next article, and I’ll see your progress. :)
Keep practicing, kiddo, you got potential!

why not try getting a LIFE! I mean seriously you walk around these places like you know everything and its impossible for someone else to have more knowledge than you, just cuz you’ve been around, doesn’t mea you’ve actually EXPERIENCED anything, you can never say, “I was there” because it seems to me that all you did was stand around and watch then wait for someone to come tell you what happened. Which ivelearned seems to ALWAYS get lost in translation somehow. Now my advice to you since you decided to go the route of calling me a “kid” is to go shoot yourself in the face so that way the world doesn’t have to look at your hideous face anymore.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
I give it a C+ gapz, although you were doing pretty good for the first couple sentences, I think the whole “shoot yourself in the face” thing was a little much ;)
April 7th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
trash nobody asked your opinion or to get involved so just dont, vinnie do not ever call me a child again and i wont have to resort that low to comment on how ugly you are, i apologize for simply stating a fact
April 7th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
so… it’s not simply stating a fact that you’re a kid?
oh damn I said a bad word guess I better go shoot myself in the face now
besides, look up there, he called phil a kiddo, not you ;-)
April 7th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
oh yea I know nobody asked me to get involved but I don’t like how you guys are saying mean stuff to Vinnie, who is actually trying to do something positive, rather than just insult people all the time which is what your clique is ALL about.
and DUDE – you know vinnie is only 15 yrs old right? you guys are probably the exact same age!
April 7th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Guys, this is pathetic. Seriously, what is the point of all this bashing?
Lets all jsut get along yeah =)
And phil man, come on, YOU of all people know what its like to be on the recieving end of this kind of stuff (what with the whole ‘unfair banning from HL’ fiasco).
Back in the day (and i know you’ll vouch for this) apart from HL, these was none of this stuff, and if this art is going to go progress, we’re actually gonna have to pull together…
This aint a go at Phil or anything, coz i’ve liked u for years man, and i still do. I’m just saying, in general, this stuff is defiately going downhill.
In other news, although Vinnie hasn’t released a public video yet, from what he said, he obviously isnt ‘staying underground’ just for the sake of it. He’s planning the video and getting his stuff together, and theres no better reason for not releasing a video than wanting it to be perfect when you finally do.
I dont know whats ruffled your feathers, but I know apart you’re both really decent guys, and I LOVE U BOTH! now lets be friends! xxxxx

Trash knows it all and Vinnie is pure bullshit. People who have met up with Vinnie have told me his material is crap. Truth be known I just don’t like the guys.
