[CCC 2008] Adam on the Contest results

Fiddling Steve and I entered this competition with one purpose. We didn’t enter the competition to try to gain fame, to better theory11, or prove anything. We entered to win. We realized that if we could put part of ourselves into the video – show everyone our personalities, that we would be different. Rather than pretending to be mysterious and underground we took you with us on our day in the city. Along the way several strange things happened, such as a cab driver telling me that the card I produced in his window was his, the random man walking up to me asking about how I threw cards so far, and more that couldn’t be shown.
We had a good time sharing each other’s company and hope that those watching can appreciate this. It is a true rarity in this world to find a fellow flourisher who lives in such close proximity. Add to this, a true camaraderie and the number suddenly drops to single digits. We understood this – it greatly improved our odds. If we could perform moves that utilize the two of us, we would enter into unchartered territories. Surely a panel of judges would appreciate two person moves in a collaboration competition, right? Well…one would think so.
Don’t take this the wrong way; the F501 video was truly an eye-popping work of cinematography. I have the upmost respect for you guys and wish you all luck in the future, although you really don’t need it. What troubles me about the results is the grading system. It seems fair. You look for videos that contain quality, originality, creativity, and a certain something. Naturally the last quality is somewhat gray; there’s no way to concretely explain what makes something “pop.” However, for the other three, there most certainly are. Theory11, you want to be the best forum, store, media center? Learn from those who have had contests before you. Handlordz, the originators of the so called “Battle”, created a system that declared a winner without any doubt. Like a teacher grading a paper, a rubric was designed that graded each portion of the video. This ensured the fairest results.
What happened was, you told us that our video had the best material. Dave Buck said himself that had this been a shorter video, we would have won – hands down. This puts a slightly bitter taste in my mouth. Let me verify for a second that this is in fact a collaboration contest. Were we not meant to create a video that utilized two or more people? What Steve and I did was perform moves that none of the other contestants thought of performing. We collaborated not only during the video, but in the very moves; performing cut sequences in time, transferring packets mid cut, and pulling cards from each others springs. Is this not what you were looking for? These moves had more originality than other groups – they had never been seen, they were devised in a Pinkberry. They were more creative. We saw the collaboration as a challenge and tried to create moves that would best show the teamwork. Quality you said was top-notch. So what then was the issue?
It seems this gray area has reared its ugly head. The intangible “wow factor” seems to have made the ultimate difference. So it was the style? I’m sorry that Steve and I stayed true to who we are. We aren’t mysterious. We’re two unassuming guys who can do some pretty neat stuff with cards. For us to make a video where we aren’t running around doing ridiculous things and generally having a good time would be ridiculous. It would be like the Bucks donning cloaks because it’s the cool thing to do at the time. I think that what many of us may have lost sight of, is the simple fact that what we are doing is playing with cards.
I’m not asking for a recount, an explanation, or an apology, because I don’t expect any. I just want people to see that flourishing doesn’t have to be so serious. Feel free to perform the way you want. With time, people will appreciate what you’re doing. Who knows, YOU may even get to be 3rd place in a contest somewhere!
-Adam

April 30th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Jow, Tical hat recht. Bashen wir ihn auf Deutsch damit niemands versteht xD
Stop crying out loud adam, the judges made their decision and to be honest I thought your vid was boring. Nevermind, your a great flourisher – steve aswell. But F501 was one step above your 4 minute thing.
April 30th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
TicaL joder habla en ENGLISH un poco para que la gente entienda lo que dices sin tener que utilizar el traductor de google.
besos marica :P
April 30th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

April 30th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

April 30th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Your moves were good, but the presentation was boring. F501 Video was a lot better.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Haha, Tical got owned xD.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Hey, adam, hope you read this dude: I loved your video, whatever anyone else says, I do beleive F501 was of better quality in cinamatography and new and original flourishes so i’d hand them 1st place but yours should have easily taken 2nd. I think thats quite unfair the placing wise, yours I still very much enjoyed and I think people need to make their own decitions on whether they enjoyed it or not, seems to me like everyone is now saying its too long but only after a dave buck said so. Great video adam and steve you are both mucho talented.
April 30th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
TL;DR
April 30th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
you realize that you got the same prize as 1st place which is the amazing plaque…
I think 501 did more moves I’d never seen before, like those insane pirouette variations!
your packet switching, dual cut combos and pulling cards from each others springs has all been done before, it’s ignorant to say your video had original moves that have never been seen
April 30th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
means: this damn text is too long, just like your fucking video. I hate people crying like little girls and then writing long-ass essays because of not winning a contest. get the fuck over it, your video just wasn’t good enough. period.
April 30th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
I liked your video. But, I think that this competition shoudln’t be taken so seriously. It was just a reason to make f*ckin good flourishing videos.
April 30th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
I agree with Adam… no offense
April 30th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I beleive yours was best, you succeed yoru goal with me, a really fun feel and showed your personalitys briolliantly with some of the most amazing moves I’ve seen in a LONG time.
Everyone has differnt tastes and if the judges dint liek yours save it till next time, I admire your determination and thrive to win, you should direct this into improving though, take into account what you were told rubbish what you dissagree with and take what you can. I beleive your one of the best guys out there at the moment, but you need to channel this towards improvement.
April 30th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
“means: this damn text is too long, just like your fucking video. I hate people crying like little girls and then writing long-ass essays because of not winning a contest. get the fuck over it, your video just wasn’t good enough. period.”
you missed the point entirely.
April 30th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
No on else has felt the need to do an umpteen word essay on the injustices they feel have been put on them.
You have good points in the essay but they are only there to disguise your whinging.
Be a MAN and shut up.
April 30th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
maybe. couldn’t read through all that garbage. too much drama
April 30th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
You are such a bad loser.
Grow up kid.
April 30th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Those of you who have only negative comments – read what I have written.
April 30th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
I’ve red dis shit and will tell ya again.
You act like a pussy and ain’t like a men!
Honestly, for me it’s been like the worst case,
that a wackhead like YOU made it up to the 3rd place!
April 30th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Let me repeat.
You have good points in the essay but they are only there to disguise your whinging.
Be a MAN and shut up.
April 30th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
I have read everything you said, still you are a patethic guy.
Be happy for them and dont cry, grow up.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:10 am
You entered to win… And you didn’t, so its not a big deal. You still got a thing with your name on it. Flourishing should be for the fun of it, not for the winnings, because then your not having fun unless you win.
Yeah you had some awesome moves in your video, but the Judges didn’t think your video was as good as some of the others (neither did I). You didn’t get forced into this contest. You choose which contest you were going to enter, so basically you choose who was going to be judging you. So don’t start complaining when the people you choose (basically) didn’t think your video was winning material.
Thats my thought on it
May 1st, 2008 at 12:34 am
Adam. Your a sore loser. Get over it.
May 1st, 2008 at 1:55 am
“Be a MAN and shut up.”
“You act like a pussy and ain’t like a men[sic]!”
“Grow up kid.”
“you are a patethic[sic] guy”
“I hate people crying like little girls”
Good to see that suppressing your standpoint is still a masculine thing to do!
Next time someone makes a complaint such as this, if you don’t agree, then there are two options:
A. if you have a brain -
Post a respectful and justified argument as to why you disagree with the blog post.
B. if you don’t have a brain -
(recommended for: uglyface, hyo, menik, Care, TicaL, Guest)
Don’t post. Learn to clean up your language, learn how to spell, get your testosterone levels down from the dangerously idiotic level, maybe learn that people have emotions too. Then, come back.
May 1st, 2008 at 2:00 am
I read ur essay many times and u do have a valid point but you really should just suck it up and take your lose. If it was not ur intent to give off this message then rewrite ur essay, public announcement or what ever it is and make it so everything is clear. Because in that essay you sound like a sore loser.
May 1st, 2008 at 2:51 am
@daduprememep…
Well, I guess half the people you just named don’t even speak english as their first language. So much about spelling you ignorant american fuck!
May 1st, 2008 at 4:43 am
I’m not American.
,!,(-.-),!,
May 1st, 2008 at 5:09 am
Not to you Adam , but to the people commenting , and saying shit, they just need to shut up.
May 1st, 2008 at 6:11 am
adam maybe you have some good points, but the judges weree the ones that decided, and if they said that f501 was better then yours, its their decission, they had the power to decide, you didnt :)
btw are you saying that the judgement should be like HL?
and you should post this essay to all the people that judged the CCC
May 1st, 2008 at 10:38 am
Hey people please stop being harsh !
Adam didn’t insult any one, so why do you insult him ? I don’t agree with him on all his points but no need no throw it at his face. You can argue with him peacefully…
I answered on T11 boards.
May 1st, 2008 at 11:15 am
Ach fickt euch alle scheiß Kartengeeks!!!!!
May 1st, 2008 at 1:20 pm
@ Mattgic
Adam used to insult EVERYONE. You can’t bite on both ends of the stick at the same time.
May 1st, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Adam where are you!
May 1st, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Lol@Tical
May 1st, 2008 at 5:17 pm
damn I dont even speak that much german and I could understand tical lol…
well, Adam is just getting a taste of his own medicine in these comments, hes not traditionally been the nicest guy when commenting on other people’s videos
May 1st, 2008 at 7:29 pm
“You have good points in the essay but they are only there to disguise your whining.”
I’m with uglyface on this one. From what I “know” you you’re a good guy Adam, but let this go.
May 1st, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Here’s the conflict in this situation. You create a video based on what a good collaboration should comprise of: originality, personality, and teamwork. Your video showed you guys having a fun time and taking flourishing to the streets. That’s good and all, but you entered a contest on theory11. That means in order to win, you have to appeal to the judging of the t11 staff, and frankly that’s usually the material that f501 shows more of, with more crisp professional cinematography and dressing up nicely to go play with cards around a fancy looking vehicle.
I’m not saying you should conform to their style with all of your future videos. A lot of people really enjoy your style and the feel of your videos, and you shouldn’t change that over what a few judges think.
However, if you’re only doing cardistry and making videos to win contests, then you have two options. One, do conform to what they want in a video. Two, stick with your videos, but don’t get all upset when they don’t give you third place because someone else had what you didn’t.
May 1st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
** in the last sentence, I meant to say when they DO give you third place
May 1st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Adam = whining little bitch
That is all.
May 2nd, 2008 at 1:22 am
Guys! If I had 3 words to say to you all it’d be:
FUCK OFF HIM…
Geez… He’s making a point from HIS perspective. Respect it. If you have anything negative to say, don’t post.
May 2nd, 2008 at 6:07 am
haha, and the people here are making points from THEIR perspective. He was the the one bragging and whining, so who’s the one who should shut up because he has something negative to say?
May 2nd, 2008 at 9:03 am
That’s a good point,Dasuprememep.
However, I guess Adam doesn’t care that much about people emotions either when it comes to video comments.
Anyways, I enjoyed the video but I don’t get this whole thing here.
What can I say? You mentioned flourishing should be for fun.So stop bitching and move on.
And for T11… I recommend the same time for all videos in the next contest.I was surprised there wasnt a simple rule like this.Tough to judge videos from 1 to 5 minutes, isn’t it?
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:21 pm
IF U HAD HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE WAY THEY WERE PLACING THE VIDEOS DONT SAY SHIT AFTER YOU DIDNT GET THE PLACE U WERE LOOKING FOR. IF U HAD A PROBLEM THEN U SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING BEFORE
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm
it really was not a bad video. it was actually very good. but f501 was and jaspas vs bowen was kick ass
May 3rd, 2008 at 2:07 am
all of you who insulted adam only did so because this is a comment board instead of a message board, grow some balls.
Adam has a point, it was a COLLAB video. Look at the winner of the UDCC, they INTERACTED with each other thats why they won. F501 was an awsome video, no doubt it was one of the best videos of this year so far, but it was not a collaboration video in my opinion. Adam and Steve used moves that utilized each other instead of just doing moves next to each other, theres a huge difference.
