Wine, Cheese, and Cards? – Decknique Aug 15 ‘07

What in the world do wine, cheese, and cards have in common? You can’t drink cards and cheese, you can’t eat cards and wine, and you can’t cut wine. So what in the world is this thread about?

I’ll tell you what they all have in common: Aging. A finely aged wine and cheese will give you the best results. And as proven so far, so will a finely aged deck of cards.

Let’s look at what we know so far. Some of the oldest commonly used cards are Jerry’s nugget. When reading up on these fabulous cards, I’ve found out that they were printed on normal bicycle stock, nothing special. They weren’t coated differently. At the time of production, they were just normal cards. So what makes them so great? I can’t know for sure, but I have a pretty good idea- They’ve aged. Something about 20,000 decks of cards stuck in a werehouse for 20 years makes them absolutely fantastic. Another example is old studs. I know that they were printed on different material than the new studs. However, I think that the even short amount of aging that they have gone through has made them superior cards.

We also know that putting away old, used cards for a few months makes them like new. People throw away their worn decks, but I’ve never understood that. I still use the first deck of league backed cards I ever bought frequently. Every time I seem to suck the life out of it, I put it in a box and forget about it, and then bring it back out, like new.”[...]

   I dropped a deck of vintage 1800 into water, and left them for about 6 months. I took them out again yesterday and they are actually quite okay.

   I never had Jerry’s Nugget in my hands… in fact I used only tally-ho…

   I would love to have at least one deck of Wynn’s =) or Jerry’s Nugget :P
